Choosing The Perfect Sauna Wood
1. Clear Cedar
Clear Western Red Cedar is a premium, knot-free option with a smooth, uniform appearance. It’s naturally resistant to moisture, decay, and insects, making it ideal for both indoor and outdoor saunas. Known for its signature aroma and excellent heat performance, cedar stays comfortable to the touch even at high temperatures. Best for a clean, high-end sauna finish.
2. Knotty Cedar
Knotty Cedar offers the same durability, insulation properties, and natural resistance as clear cedar, but with visible knots and more variation in the grain. This gives it a more rustic, traditional look while keeping costs lower. A great choice for those who want cedar performance with added character.
3. Aspen
Aspen is a light-colored hardwood with a smooth texture and minimal knots, making it a popular choice for modern sauna interiors. It has no strong scent and does not release resin, creating a clean and neutral sauna environment. Aspen stays cool to the touch and performs well in high heat and humidity.
4. Alder
Alder features a warm, slightly richer tone than aspen with a consistent, straight grain. It offers a smooth finish with minimal knots and very little odor. Alder is stable under heat and humidity, making it a reliable option for sauna benches, walls, and backrests.
5. Thermo-Aspen
Thermo-Aspen is heat-treated aspen that has been modified for increased durability and dimensional stability. The thermal process enhances resistance to moisture, warping, and decay while giving the wood a deeper, richer color. It’s an excellent choice for long-lasting sauna builds and contemporary designs.
